Many tooth problems can be solved with simple filling restorations, but sometimes due to extent of tooth loss or for cosmetic concerns, it may be necessary to crown the tooth. Many refer to the dental crowns as caps or hats, which cover the entire top of the tooth. There are many materials that can be used such as gold, porcelain, and ceramics.
Dental crowns may be required for many reasons for instance to replace a missing tooth a bridge may be placed that crowns two teeth and has a fake or false tooth in between. Other reasons a crown might be advised is if the decay is too large for a filling, if the tooth has had a root canal, or if the tooth is discolored and you want to cover it.
The process of making a crown generally takes two appointments. During the first appointment, the decay is removed, and the tooth is prepared to fit the crown. At this appointment, an impression is taken that is sent to a laboratory. The laboratory will build the crown and return it to our office where we can place it. It generally takes about 2 weeks from start to finish.
