Most children begin teething at 6 months of age and have all their baby teeth at around 2 years old. At around 6 years old is when children begin losing teeth and this will continue until the age of ten to twelve. Permanent teeth begin to come in at 6 years. It is a common misconception that baby teeth fall out and because of that oral hygiene is not important at an early age. This, however, is far from the truth. Dental habits follow us through life and those that have poor dental habits at an early age tend to have problems throughout life.
Baby teeth will generally fall out with time, but this does not mean it is a “free pass”. Dental decay and plaque not only affect the teeth but also the environment of the mouth. If the environment of the mouth is bad while teeth are developing and erupting it may lead to problems with adult teeth. It is important to start good habits at an early age, which helps ingrain good habits for a lifetime.
