When a baby tooth is lost prematurely it may be necessary to place a space maintainer. Space maintainers are a device that acts as an arm to leave space for the adult tooth to erupt into.
Loss of baby teeth can cause teeth to shift and may not leave room for eruption of the permanent teeth. When space is lost often orthodontic treatment is necessary to correct the malalignment.
There are several types of space maintainers. Fixed space maintainers are cemented on the teeth and are removed when they are no longer necessary. Fixed maintainers come in different forms from some that can be placed the same day to others that are made in a lab and take two appointments. Removable space maintainers are made of clear plastic or pink acrylic and can be removed and cleaned as often as needed.
We will be happy to assist you with any questions you might have about space maintenance please call and set up a visit to discuss your needs.
